Sarah Mongeau-Birkett wants to show how Copenhagen looks through the eyes and lens of a Canadian exchange student. In her project '25x7, a Danish adventure through my lens', she take a photograph each day to document her stay

She takes pictures of anything from famous monuments such as the Round Tower, to danish specialities such as organic raspberry lemonade.

The University Post will publish Sarah's photos, which show Copenhagen through the eyes of an international student.

We have ranked them from 10 to 1, with the best for the end.

Maybe you have a few cheap tips of your own? Write them in the comments section below, and let others in on the secret!

Top 10 public works

Construction sites are turning Copenhagen upside down, moving graves, shaking your topography and bringing back to light 11th century wood settlements. Find out what is going on in the city with our top ten list of public works!

10. New pavement in front of the University

Have you ever noticed that statues of nine Nobel Prize winners from the University of Copenhagen decorate the façade of the main University building at Frue Plads?

Well, they should have given them earplugs. Relief is on the way however. Works to renew the square are soon over!

5. New metro stop facing City Hall

One of the stops of the new Metro line will be 'Rådhuspladsen'. That's why the square is so messy right now.

The works inspired street artist Bert, who has decorated the construction site with wooden sculptures (see the photo gallery).

Read an article about Bert on the Classic Copenhagen blog.

4. Mind the hole on Strøget

Now that one constantly has to avoid new holes, walking at Strøget has been a bit more stressful than usual.

Let them eat pancakes

Lord Mayor of Copenhagen hosted an informational event at City Hall to help newcomers get involved on Monday, 4 October. Despite the main event of free pancakes, hundreds showed up to learn how they could integrate into their new Danish home.

Lord Mayor served pancakes at City Hall

Living in Copenhagen should be a cultural experience. But how do you become integrated into this seemingly ‘cold’ society? On Monday October 4th, the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen hosted an informational event at City Hall to help newcomers get involved.

Finding your footing

Over thirty different booths, mostly sports clubs, were displayed at the event. The KTK86 Triathalon club, Natha Yoga Centre, Amager Chess Club, Pan Idræt GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender) sports club and American football, among others, welcomed students and other non-Danish speakers.

Swimming like the Vikings

You could go for a ride on Tivoli’s rollercoaster or try to keep pace with Danish drinkers. But for the real thrill-seekers, the Viking swim on Saturday (18-09-2010) offered an authentic celebration of the semester’s start.

Forty enthusiastic international students signed up on Facebook for the event, organized by ESN Copenhagen (Exchange Student Network).

But on the day itself, only six showed up and just two with towels. It is a good thing the Vikings did not rely on Facebook in their day.

Tough University Post reporter Maya was one of the two brave souls to take the plunge.

No point in learning Danish

For full-degree student Riccardo Mioli from Italy, learning Danish seemed like a good idea when he first arrived in Copenhagen. Now, one year later, he has changed his mind.

»In the beginning I wanted to learn Danish. But after 6 or 7 months here, when I still didn’t know any Danish, it seemed like a waste of time to start. Now I have given up.«

It is easy to survive in Copenhagen only speaking in English, and the Danes quickly switch over if they hear someone struggling with the tricky guttural Danish pronunciation, he says.
