Most of us stick to the campus area where we have lectures or some other legitimate errand, leaving the rest of the university an unchartered territory teeming with undiscovered installations and quirky sculptures. Here, we take a quick look at some of the permanent fixtures and temporary student exhibits which comprise the alternately solemn and whimsical world of campus art.

Menstrual blood art installation in basement

Menstruation. What is it about the word that makes us all (yes, even the women among us) feel awkward?

At a Feminist Materialisms conference held this past April, visiting researchers Miriam Wistreich and Alexandra Jönsson blended science and art in an attempt to lighten the mood around the dreaded 'time of the month' and explain its significance in gender discourse:

Artist highlights sexism in the press

'Søren' and 'Simon' are more likely to get into the press, than 'Edith' and 'Else'. This is the central message delivered by Elin Amundsen's new exhibit.

The artist has literally highlighted, in pink and blue, the different coverage that men and women receive from the media. It seeks to demonstrate how newspapers treat gender.

She selected two paper newspapers: Politiken and the Universitetsavisen / University Post for her investigations.

Eating mom and dad

This is not what most professors would say during a lecture when speaking of homes.

But then University of Copenhagen assistant professor Mark Vacher is not like most. Vacher explains to the University Post that the kitchen is where children consume their parent’s love, in the form of tasty meals lovingly prepared for them by mom and dad, which is one of the ways a house is transformed into a home for the residing family.

Where the art is

Rushing to your lecture hall at 13 minutes past the hour with a steaming latte cup in hand, the rich variety of artistic offerings at the University of Copenhagen campuses may well have escaped your notice.

The works of art on display on campus a somewhat overlooked aspect of the University environment, blending into the background as, quite literally, part of the furniture.

Art: Opening of Colliderscope

A new light sculpture transmits live signals from the Large Hadron Collider experiment in Switzerland to Nils Bohr Institute's facade on Blegdamsvej. Here, you can see pictures from the opening event which took place last week.

Hundreds of LED bulbs on the outside of Nils Bohr Institute (NBI) in Blegdamsvej will transmit live signals from particle collisions at the Large Hadron Collider physics experiment in CERN, Switzerland.

Von Trier: Antichrist »a kind of therapy«

In a recent interview, eccentric Danish film maker Lars Von Trier, the man behind the intense and macabre film Antichrist, revealed that a severe depression drove his creative process while writing the script.

The film was shown at a special screening at the Film House (Filmhuset) on Gothersgade on Friday, as part of a conference held by the Faculty of Humanities’ Department of Media, Cognition and Communication.

The experts: How to make your own job

The financial crisis has apparently set off a wave of entrepreneurship. In Denmark, the numbers of student-started companies has gone up, not down, since Europe’s paralysing recession ground the normal amount of jobs for graduates to a halt. Here is how you can be a part of the movement. Create a job of your own, and stop being dependent on a disappointing job market.

Are Danish students spoilt?

Comment: Education is not just to get a job

Words like ‘critical skills’ and ‘reflexivity’ are just trendy buzz. Instead we need to imagine a just world, argues Amir Susic, a humanities student at the University of Copenhagen
