Life, love and language issues

Psychology student Mary Chan (21) from the USA got off to a chaotic start on her first day in Denmark, rushing straight from the airport to her first class. But since then Copenhagen has made a good impression.

See also picture gallery to the right.

»The first week was hectic because I arrived about two hours before my first class started so I had to rush to class. Actually I didn’t feel jetlagged because I was so excited,« says Mary to the University Post.

Your winter soundtrack: Studenterhuset guide

New year, new playlist. With a semester lurking around the corner it’s nice to know that Studenterhuset is waiting with open arms. The January programme is guaranteed to breathe life back into the dark evenings.

Every season has its genres, and jazz is probably the style that best romanticizes the winter. So it is appropriate that Studenterhuset is lets loose in January and February with 'Winter Jazz'. Studenterhuset also has plenty of indie rock in the beginning of the new year.

Student bar reopens after facelift

Those of you who have been around for a while may remember the ‘old’ student café. Smoky, sticky floor and conversation-drowning music. Always a popular hangout for internationals, the Studenterhuset was loved more for its cheap beer than for any kind of style or comfort.

But now, after five months and DKK 3.7 million of renovations, the Studenterhuset might just have more to offer than cheap booze.

Lord Mayor served pancakes at City Hall

Living in Copenhagen should be a cultural experience. But how do you become integrated into this seemingly ‘cold’ society? On Monday October 4th, the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen hosted an informational event at City Hall to help newcomers get involved.

Finding your footing

Over thirty different booths, mostly sports clubs, were displayed at the event. The KTK86 Triathalon club, Natha Yoga Centre, Amager Chess Club, Pan Idræt GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender) sports club and American football, among others, welcomed students and other non-Danish speakers.

Swimming like the Vikings

You could go for a ride on Tivoli’s rollercoaster or try to keep pace with Danish drinkers. But for the real thrill-seekers, the Viking swim on Saturday (18-09-2010) offered an authentic celebration of the semester’s start.

Forty enthusiastic international students signed up on Facebook for the event, organized by ESN Copenhagen (Exchange Student Network).

But on the day itself, only six showed up and just two with towels. It is a good thing the Vikings did not rely on Facebook in their day.

Tough University Post reporter Maya was one of the two brave souls to take the plunge.
