Beer and boardgames at political science camp

The last weekend of February saw the Cabin Trip, for all international students studying Political Science at the University of Copenhagen.

Around 50 students and Danish mentors took part in the weekend away in the countryside of Northwest Zealand.

The Cabin Trip is held each year and is quite popular among students who get the chance to meet most of their fellow classmates and have a great time.

This year was no exception: beer was abundant, laughs were omnipresent and great friendships were established.

Tour de Chambre party at Tietgenkollegiet

Most international students residing at a dorm will sooner or later have a 'Tour de Chambre'. This party is merely a good excuse to drink a ridiculous amount of alcohol and consists of going from one room to the other, drinking along the way.

This way you can see how 'hyggeligt' (cosily, ed.) your neighbour's room is decorated, get to know your roomates better and play games (drinking games, of course).

For the Tour de Chambre, your room needs to have a theme and it had better be a good one, because you're Danish counterparts do not lack imagination.

Less housing help for newcomers

Each summer the housing season repeats itself in Copenhagen with too few rooms for too many students. The admitted students from Denmark sign up for residence halls and shared flats, hoping for a room in time for the start of semester.

Some take whatever they can get in overpriced apartments or stay with relatives in the far-out suburbs for months until they find a room.

Now more internationals may have to join this strenuous Danish room-hunt.

Denmark charmed more students last year

Three per cent more exchange and guest students from overseas chose Denmark as their host country in 2009, compared to 2008. This is after year-on-year increases.

This is according to a press release by Danske Universiteter (Danish Universities, ed.).

The University of Copenhagen has seen a much greater increase than the average at the Danish universities. Six per cent more internationals chose the University of Copenhagen in 2009 than in 2008. This increase is double that of Danish universities in general.

Get off to a good start with an Erasmus mentor

New Erasmus students at the University of Copenhagen have the possibility of being assigned a Danish student as their mentor.

The mentor programme is beneficial for both mentor and mentee. International students get to fulfil an often-expressed wish to mingle with the Danes, and the Danish mentor participates in a cultural exchange.

Danish reserve

Sometimes, for international students staying for just one or two semesters, it is easier to socialise with other foreign students than with Danes. They are all in the same postion and therefore tend to flock together.

Carlsberg, Mærsk, Søren Kirkegaard and H.C. Andersen were some of the quintessentially Danish concepts presented to around 150 expectant and slightly nervous new international students from all over the world.

They had fought the cold and, in some cases, dragged enormous suitcases straight from the airport to the Faculty of Social Sciences so they could attend the International Office’s orientation meeting.

Guest students at Life Sciences speak out

Most aspects of student life in Copenhagen live up to the expectations of guest students at the Faculty of Life sciences. Apart from the substandard accommodation, lack of contact with the Danes and the culture shock of incomprehensible plagiarism rules, that is.
