To assess the influence of extreme endurance efforts on the human body, six well-trained male cyclists, averaging sixty years of age, are biking up to the north of Norway. More than 200 kilometres a day in fourteen days.

They will be followed by two University of Copenhagen medical students who will meticulously record their intake of water and collect urine samples to estimate the total energy consumption.

Read the report from one of the medical students, Katja Kjær, who is following the group here and here.

Day six: Like the Tour de France

In many ways, the six friends from Ventoux are riding just like the Tour de France. The distance of the stages is the same, and the daily programme consists of sleeping, biking and a giant intake of everything eatable or drinkable, and heavily loaded with carbohydrates.

Just like the Tour de France, this trip has a rest day. Or almost, a rest day, as the group rode ‘only’ 99.8 km.

By bike to northern Norway, in only two weeks

Cyclists are like migratory birds. When the weather is bad, they normally head off to warmer climates. Not six recreational cyclists from Denmark, who used the weekend's bout of bad weather in Denmark as their cue to head off to the northernmost part of Europe – Nordkapp, or North Cape in Norway.

New professor at »aging« exhibition

Ian Hickson, professor in molecular aging, had his new job at the University of Copenhagen marked with an inauguration event Monday at the Panum Institute, complete with choral music. The ceremony also marked the opening of a new exhibition on aging by the Medical Museion in the Panum Institute buildings.

The celebrated cancer researcher, who joins the Faculty of Health Science's Centre for Healthy Aging after 20 years at Oxford University, was full of self-deprecating humour as he recounted his career so far:

Cycling team reaches Northern Cape

Finally, our group of riders achieved their goal. From Copenhagen to Nordkapp in just fourteen days of cycling.

The last stages certainly took their toll on the riders. But with the final destination slowly appearing in the horizon, motivation did not let the six cyclists down. Since the previous update, the riders have had some hard days along the west coast of Norway, with a series of gradients worthy of the Tour de France, and another almost unforeseen challenge.

Bike experiment day 7-10: Arctic Circle

During the last four days, the six men from Ventoux, determined to complete the trip Copenhagen to Nordkapp, have moved into the crucial part of the trip.

As challenging surprises occur as well as important milestones are achieved, the six guys are starting to have their own equally exhausting infirmities.

The International Fascination of Plants Day gave visitors unprecedented access to the many collections and projects in the University's gardens and greenhouses in Frederiksberg.

Visitors were able to participate in guided tours of the outside gardens and themed talks by University staff.

Open hours in the greenhouses, information booths and a plant sale rounded out the experience. Check out our photos from the plant collection, and highlights of the day in our gallery.

Ancient societies were more complex

Here you have the Babylonians, here you have the Egyptians, here you have the Phoenicians, and here you have early Islam. And this is what they were about. Possibly the normal way to look back at Near Eastern ancient history.

But now a conference organised by the University of Copenhagen’s Center for Canon and Identity Formation intends to show how these different civilisations interacted with each other.

Feature: Clues to crisis are hidden in the data

For several decades, theoretical models in macroeconomics and finance have been almost exclusively based on the assumptions of the Rational Expectations Hypothesis (REH), the representative agent hypothesis, and the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH).

Health Faculty: We messed up, but no harm was done

Director of the Faculty of Health Sciences Arnold Boon now admits mistakes in his rendering of what happened in connection with the appearance of Milena Penkowa's freezer.

The chest freezer, which suddenly appeared last week, may, or may not, include key evidence in the ongoing investigation. It's appearance came after assurances that all Penkowa's research material was fully accounted for.
