Find your sport: USG summer programme is out

Students, Danish and international, can look forward to a summer full of activities for both body and mind.

The summer programme of the University Sports Organization, USG, has just been released: Besides weekly classes offering everything from tribal style bellydance to parkour, the programme includes several one-day events.

One such event was the mountain bike tour Sunday, 8 May, where physical activity and appreciation of the forest were reconciled. Participants had an action-packed day in the blooming forest.

Scottish volleyball star a student in Copenhagen

A full time Master’s course in one of the elite programmes at the University of Copenhagen can be tough enough. But for one student, there is more.

Anneka Hastings is packing in 10-20 hours of training, and hoping to qualify for the British national volleyball team at the upcoming London Olympics.

»I’m focussing a lot on volleyball these days because of the upcoming Olympics. But I will eventually return to research,« she vows.

International students lack Viking mentality

You could go for a ride on Tivoli’s rollercoaster or try to keep pace with Danish drinkers. But for the real thrill-seekers, the Viking swim on Saturday 18 September offered an authentic celebration of the semester’s start.

Forty enthusiastic international students signed up on Facebook for the event, organized by ESN Copenhagen (Exchange Student Network).

But on the day itself, only six showed up and just two with towels. It is a good thing the Vikings did not rely on Facebook in their day.

Teams pull up their socks for DHL relay dash

Last year’s number two team on the University of Copenhagen ranking has everything to prove after it had its victory stolen from it in 2009. ‘Black Saturns’ of the Niels Bohr Institute will turn up this year as ‘The Tachyons’, with four out of five runners the same.

Team leader Kim Splittorff of The Tachyons says that the replacement team member is »just as strong as the guy who left. We are just as fast as last year. We all train regularly, including some of us together in the high energy physics group,« he says.

DHL victory was stolen

Runners from the Institute of Food Resource Economics may have topped the University of Copenhagen rankings at the DHL-relay last year. But they inadvertently cheated the official timekeepers, and their competitors, by eight minutes.

This emerged when the University Post questioned top teams about their form before the summer recess.

Dutch students had a Copenhagen soccer-fest

It should have been an athletic massacre, and it was.

At 13:30 Monday, Danish and Dutch students alike paused their daily business to turn their attention to a most serious matter: World Cup Football.

The much-anticipated Denmark-Holland clash was screened at various public locations across town.

Danes, decked out in red-and-white hats, jerseys, and flags set up camp at Kvæsthusbroen, while many Dutch exchange students, clad in florescent orange, took haven from the Danish crowds at The Globe, an Irish pub in the city centre.

Netball team always Danish champions

Netball is not the most high profile sport in Denmark, or anywhere else for that matter. There is only one netball club in Denmark - the Copenhagen Netball Club.

Joining them for a practice session, I am trying to get a grasp of the rules. And it occurs to me that there are a lot of them.

Bollywood dance and badminton for sporty students

International students in Copenhagen can participate in sports programmes ranging from Bollywood dancing to rock climbing. But all this physical activity is not just about hard training and competition, it is also a great way to get closer to Danish students and their culture.

This is according to Ebbe Rasmussen, the manager of the USG sports club, who encourages more internationals to take part.
