Feature: How to make a bike city

One thing is visiting. But actually moving to a city gives you a new perspective on it. Maybe you observe more because everything is new to you? You notice things that appear normal to the city’s inhabitants.

As a Canadian student moving to the postcard that is Copenhagen a few things struck me in particular: The size of the pedestrian street network, and the extent of the public spaces and parks available for citizens to enjoy, at least when the weather allows it. And of course I was amazed by the number of people biking on these large bike paths on almost every road.

Go and get your free bike

A new concept of biking is now in the streets of Copenhagen. Get a bicycle for free and help Africa.

‘Free Bikes’ offers students bikes funded by different Danish companies.

You just need to be a University student, use your bike a lot and be the lucky chosen by the advertisers.

Bringing school closer to Africans

After biking around town for one year, the bikes are collected and sent to African students.

The initiative will bring education closer to students in Africa who usually live in villages very far from schools.

See our guide to Danish biking etiquette

Those new to bike-mad Copenhagen might find themselves in trouble if they don’t know the rules of the road – or rather, the bike lane.

One wrong turn without a hand signal can put virginal cyclists in a world of pain. Not heeding the all-powerful bike bell could result in a trip to the emergency room. Avoid violations of the unwritten Danish bike ethics code by reading our bicycle etiquette guide.

New fines slapped on bike riders in Copenhagen

Copenhagen is said to be heaven for cyclists. But there is trouble after the next traffic light in paradise. Last year a fine for crossing a red was DKK 500. Now the penalty has been doubled, according to police.

And this is not the only wrongdoing that will be enforced with a DKK 1,000 fee. It is even possible to receive a double or triple fee if you’re committing several offenses at once.

The experts: How to make your own job

The financial crisis has apparently set off a wave of entrepreneurship. In Denmark, the numbers of student-started companies has gone up, not down, since Europe’s paralysing recession ground the normal amount of jobs for graduates to a halt. Here is how you can be a part of the movement. Create a job of your own, and stop being dependent on a disappointing job market.

This Sunday: Piano virtuoso to play John Cage

Art can often be many things, for different people; Confusing, inspiring, educational, and this Sunday 20 May, the Host Guest Ghost project hopes it will be a meditative experience, a ‘different’ way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

The upcoming event is a continuation of the series which the University Post covered earlier this year, (Read the article: Hot soup, art = nice, cosy, winter day) and thus far, the project has spanned five different artistic expressions and host, guest, ghost combinations.

The Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk has won the 2012 Sonning Prize, writes the University of Copenhagen in a press release.

The prize is given for a contribution to European culture.

Orhan Pamuk's largest contribution to European culture »is his obvious challenge to the cultural boundaries that are drawn around it, and his clarification of the many possibilities that lie within crossing those boundaries«, the jury at the University of Copenhagen said in the press release.

5. Take it easy in Dragør, and then do something really interesting

Dragør is a hidden and often forgotten gem. An old town that seems lost in time, it stands isolated on the end of Amager. Equipped with a beach, cafés and great ice cream it is a safe haven away from the city buzz. It is easy to get there by bike as it is just twelve kilometres from the city centre.

Cosy cafés? Come on! We are guys right?
