Swimming like the Vikings

You could go for a ride on Tivoli’s rollercoaster or try to keep pace with Danish drinkers. But for the real thrill-seekers, the Viking swim on Saturday (18-09-2010) offered an authentic celebration of the semester’s start.

Forty enthusiastic international students signed up on Facebook for the event, organized by ESN Copenhagen (Exchange Student Network).

But on the day itself, only six showed up and just two with towels. It is a good thing the Vikings did not rely on Facebook in their day.

Tough University Post reporter Maya was one of the two brave souls to take the plunge.

See inside a bear

Taxidermists at the University of Copenhagen Zoological Museum dissected a brown bear yesterday Tuesday, as part of the museum's summer programme of Natural Treasures. The bear was donated by a zoo, and will be part of the museum's permanent collection.

Every Tuesday in July, the taxidermists will dissect an exotic animal, and answer questions from the public. The demonstration takes place outside the museum at Universitetsparken 15, and is free.

On 13 and 28 July as well as on 27 August they will dissect a lion, and on 20 July, a kangaroo.

Orchestra tunes up for big concert

»Baba-ba-ba-ba-bababa---remember when you come up to the piece where it is more like this---do-do-do!«

The sound gets louder for every step I take closer to the rehearsal room – where it all happens every Wednesday evening. And as I enter, the music explodes in my ears. It is in every corner of CSS’s Kommunen – most famous for its festive Friday Bar.

See our photo gallery of the orchestra here.

I am early – and students are still coming in with their black boxes in different sizes. It is the orchestra of the University of Copenhagen.

The experts: How to make your own job

The financial crisis has apparently set off a wave of entrepreneurship. Here is how you can be a part of the movement. Create a job of your own, and stop being dependent on a disappointing job market.

This Sunday: Piano virtuoso to play John Cage

Art can often be many things, for different people; Confusing, inspiring, educational, and this Sunday 20 May, the Host Guest Ghost project hopes it will be a meditative experience, a ‘different’ way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

The upcoming event is a continuation of the series which the University Post covered earlier this year, (Read the article: Hot soup, art = nice, cosy, winter day) and thus far, the project has spanned five different artistic expressions and host, guest, ghost combinations.

The prize is given for a contribution to European culture.

5. Take it easy in Dragør, and then do something really interesting

Dragør is a hidden and often forgotten gem. An old town that seems lost in time, it stands isolated on the end of Amager. Equipped with a beach, cafés and great ice cream it is a safe haven away from the city buzz. It is easy to get there by bike as it is just twelve kilometres from the city centre.

Cosy cafés? Come on! We are guys right?
