Gallery: International Fascination of Plants Day

International Fascination of Plants Day gave visitors unprecedented access to the many collections and projects in the University's gardens and greenhouses in Frederiksberg. Visitors were able to participate in guided tours of the outside gardens and themed talks by University staff. Open hours in the greenhouses, information booths and a plant sale rounded out the experience. Check out our photos from the plant collection, and highlights of the day in our gallery. The revue spirit is spreading through the university mixed with a bit of spring. Students dress up, mock university life and have a laugh. This time around it was the students from the former Faculty of Life Sciences that got up on stage. Our photographer was there in the packed theatre to capture students turned hunters, musicians, cavemen and much more. Click the first picture and get your piece of the fun!

The Royal Library in Copenhagen is a very special library. Not because it’s royal and not because of its architecture, or view which is admittedly breathtaking. The Royal Library, also known as the Black Diamond, is one of the most popular study spots in town simply because it’s THE place to be for students. Known to house stunning nerds, brainy babes and well-dressed elderly scholars the place is practically a free, real-life version of Elite Daters online.

More information about the exhibit can also be found in our article.

Gallery: Taking hair sample from Egtved girl

The famous remains of a Bronze Age girl found near the town of Egtved is now to be used to map the genetics of the Nordic region's past. Molecular biologist Morten Allentoft of the University of Copenhagen took a lock of the girl's hair for his research.

The Egtved girl has been the object of almost cult-like veneration since she was uncovered in 1921, and since put on display at the National Museum in Copenhagen. While her clothing is almost intact, only the girl's hair, brain, teeth, nails and a bit of skin remain preserved.

Ash trees in Denmark and the rest of Europe are being severely hit by the rapidly spreading ash disease. Forestry student, Martin Slot, wants to save the species. If successful, Martin's techniques will be able to maintain and expand the three to five per cent of the remaining trees that are healthy. His project is in cooperation with the Danish Nature Agency, and aims to test hypotheses that might save the ash trees.

Comment: Education is not just to get a job

Words like ‘critical skills’ and ‘reflexivity’ are just trendy buzz. Instead we need to imagine a just world, argues Amir Susic, a humanities student at the University of Copenhagen
