06/11-09 kl. 15:14 Gulrez Shah Azhar:

As an Indian Studying here in Denmark I find this article interesting and thought provoking.

Yes there has been an economic resurgence in India but a major part of its population has been left out from sharing the spoils of this development. These people, having no option left, have taken up arms against the state and so we have a big "naxal" movement going on in the country. this is threatening to tear apart the social fabric of the country.

Another major problem, often ignored, in the country is the poor state of health system. According to governments own admission, health expenditure by the government as a % of GDP is 0.9%, i.e. fifth lowest in the world. The contrasts are scary, massive expensive 5 star hospitals in big cities and absolutely no services in villages. Expenditure on health is the single most common cause of falling into poverty.

Millions of starving people have benefited and the present government has reaped the benefits of the recent employment guarantee act (a type of unemployment benefit in villages) in elections. The government must consider strengthening the poor health system also.

There are some lessons to learn from Denmark, lessening of economic and social inequality will lead to more "happiness" !
