Things you were too embarassed to ask

Danish_lesson2 Photo: Johanne Wenstrup The new international students have many questions to ask

Lots of questions appear when you move to a new country. You want to know whether you can drink the water, how the metro works, etc. But some questions feel silly: You don't know how to ask. The University Post got a hold of 119 of these golden questions

by Elisabeth Ginsberg

Last week, the University of Copenhagen hosted an event to inform new exchange and guest students on everything from the Danish welfare model to academic practicalities.

In the middle of it, the University Post presented themselves, and we asked the newcomers a favour: To write down the things they really wanted to know but were afraid to ask.

Back in the newsroom offices, we now have a pile of slips of paper. 119 great »stupid questions« concerning everything from the facilities of the Faculty of Humanities at KUA (Why does it smell weird here?) to the contact info of the University Post (a personal favourite: How do I get Elisabeth’s phone number?).

Æ, Ø, Å and coital interaction

Some students addressed big issues such as the design of Danish coins (Why do Danish krones have holes in them?), the etymological development of the Danish alphabet (Why is the ‘O’ crossed out (Ø)?), or the genetic make-up of Danes (Why are Danish people so blonde?).

Other students had a more pragmatic approach: How do I type the Danish letters Æ, Ø, Å on a non-Danish keyboard? How come you can’t buy a 'klippekort' bus card from the bus driver? Why don’t all sinks have garbage disposals? How does one approach a Danish individual for the purpose of coital interaction?

Before asking the experts for their responses to some of these questions, we would like to give you readers a chance to help each other out. Click here to see the complete list of questions and write in the comment field below the list if you have any of the answers.

Below is University Post newsroom's selection of the best stupid questions. Vote for your favourite!

Innovator: Don’t be afraid to fail

In 2011, Gregory and two friends started the ‘Copenhagen Union’. Deliberately unambitious at the start, the initiative now trains students and organizes high-profile debates
