Limits of privacy hard to define in private apartments

With a shortage of rooms in dormitories and flats expensive, one solution is to rent a room in someone else's apartment.

In this case, you live with your landlord or landlady and share a kitchen and bathroom. However, living with a landlord may not be as easy as it seems, as two international students found out.

They both had unpleasant experiences living under the same roof of their landlords in Copenhagen. A matter of cultural differences? Judge for yourself.

First night, first rules

Halley Robertson, from Australia, lived for one semester in a rented room at an apartment facing the Kongens Nytorv square. Her landlady was a 50-year old widow whose rules were made clear from the first night.

Halley was not allowed to keep any personal possessions in the bathroom. If she accidentally left her shampoo bottle, she would later find it on the floor outside her room. She was not allowed to use the laundry machine, but was to use the laundromat one kilometre away.

The rules kept on coming: Guests were permitted in the apartment, only if they were very quick and quiet in the bathroom, and they could only be in Robertson's room.

»I remember my landlady shouting at me for bringing my friend into the kitchen to make a cup
of tea,« Halley says, »I found it very rude.«

Best option to stay invisible

Halley soon came to understand that there were other non-specified rules. She was not to be in the same room at the same time as her landlady.

»It was expected that I was invisible and she would not even say good morning or hello unless prompted«, explains Robertson.

Things came to a head as the warm weather approached and the landlady’s sunbathing season approached. Unfortunately, for the Australian student, the best sunlight was right next to the kitchen window.

»I recall one Saturday afternoon walking to the kitchen to grab some food and getting yelled at to leave as she was sunbathing there,« Halley recalls.

A bit too nice

While some landlords prefer you to just go away, others are quite the opposite.

Berta Larre, from Spain, arrived in Copenhagen a few months ago. Her landlord was very nice, in fact, he was too nice.

At first she didn't think it was abnormal that he invited on the first day invited her into his room to watch a film with his nine-year-old child. However, he slowly started to behave strangely:

»He showed me a pair of sexy silk women's underwear and said he loved these kinds of clothing,« Berta explains.

Enough for one day, thanks

The worst part came when Larre told him about her father's profession: gynaecologist. His answer? »He said he really would have liked to be a gynaecologist to see women's...« she recalls, still horrified.

This was enough for her to know that it was not a place she wanted to stay for one more day.

Berta now shares an apartment with an Italian student.

My middle-aged landlady seemed very friendly and helpful at first, always asking how my day was or if I needed anything. She was also very controlling about reminding me to lock the doors and close the windows and turn off lights, as if I were a five-year-old child. She also of course limited international student access to only the bedroom and basement of the huge beautiful house. That's fine, but when I complained about something once, her attitude switched very quickly from friendly to one of avoidance. She has spoken two words to me in two weeks. Is it just me, or is this false friendliness a perfect example of how "shallow" Europeans famously think Americans are? Except that I (an American) would never be as shallow and two-faced as this Danish woman seems to be!

That landlady is rather well known as a friend of mine also stayed with her. Several people complained about her and still she is getting new students every semester from the university. I wonderful how that can be?

Facts

Rooms in Copenhagen

Exchange students (non-Nordic)
If you are an exchange student at the University of Copenhagen, the International Office will provide housing for you. This could be a room in a residence hall / dorm, or in a shared flat or private home where the landlord/landlady usually lives as well.

Guest, full degree students, Nordic students and PhD students
If you are a guest, full degree, student from another Nordic country, or PhD student, you are not offered housing via the International Office, but must find housing on your own. The exception to this is the Faculty of Life Sciences which provides housing to all international students.

Not offered housing, then what?
Students who are here for two semesters can apply directly to the two main dorm organisations at kollegierneskontor.dk and ciu.dk. See the International office’s housing site
here.

Copenhagen Campus
The projected Copenhagen Campus will, in its first phase, house 1,100 students and 400 researchers.

If it goes through, it will be in the old Carlsberg brewery area and include housing, cafés, sports facilities, kindergarten, church, mosque and shops.

It will cost DKK 2 billion, privately funded from Danish foundations and strongly branded Danish companies. The campus would be run as a self-regulating foundation.

The University of Copenhagen has contributed DKK 50,000 to a preliminary study.
