Rector Ralf Hemmingsen opens the room for discussion
29 April, University of Copenhagen students and staff began the process of developing a new 4-year strategy for the University

The University of Copenhagen invited all its students and staff to attend the kick-off meeting of »Strategy 2016«, a new project intended to clarify the University’s visions for the next years.

Around 130 people showed up in the Ceremonial Hall to share their thoughts on the possibilities and challenges facing the University.

Rector Ralf Hemmingsen started off by presenting his thoughts on the University’s future and the possible content of a new strategy.

Three big challenges

»Excellent research must remain the foundation of our University,« said the Rector before mentioning the three big challenges that he believes the new University strategy should address:

The growing need for university candidates, the increased global competition, and the demand to make research with relevance for the surrounding society.

»Let's discuss how to pull in the same direction so as to make the University of Copenhagen wagon move,« Rector said. The rest of the meeting was then dedicated to group work and brainstorming.

Only the beginning

The attendants were divided into three groups, each discussing the University’s internal affairs, the University as a global actor, and the University’s role in society.

Conclusions from these discussions are to provide the foundation for up-coming strategy meetings.

Over the last few years, the University of Copenhagen has gotten smaller. But it has accepted a record amount of students and hired more staff. Students and staff complain, but management argues that less space doesn't equal worse conditions
