New giant science edifice on both sides of the Jagtvej throughfare will have 45,000 square metres of space and a DKK 1.25 billion price tag

by Christoffer Zieler, Mike Young

Glass facades with distorted angles, large common spaces, and a walkbridge, called a Spanish rambla, over the Jagtvej road throughfare. Just a few of the new elements in the massive new University of Copenhagen construction project, the new Niels Bohr Science Park.

The winners of the architectural competition presented the sketches and drawings last week.

The whole edifice will be finished in 2014-2015 corresponding to the centennial of three seminal articles of physicist Niels Bohr, introducing the Nuclear Age.

Check out our gallery with the sketches and plans of the new project here.

It will be a building with green 'arteries' spanning several floors, with ample use of daylight lighting. Five subject areas will have their address there: Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Science Education and Mathematics, a total of 3-4.000 students and 800 researchers, ph.d. students and a large administration.

»Bohr would have been proud,« Rector Ralf Hemmingsen said in a press release.

Facts

Niels Bohr Science Park
Niels Bohr Science Park is to be constructed in two phases. The first part, on one side of Jagtvej is where the Northern Campus is already. This will be finished in 2014.

Second stage is to be finished in 2015, pending local politicians giving planning permission.

The winning design is from Christensen and co. / Vilhelm Lauritzen, with Rambøll DK as lead advisor.
