Life Sciences programme in English will train the brewers of the future

by Luci Ellis

In a brand new initiative, university students can train to become master brewers. This is according to the Faculty of Life Sciences' website.

The course combines a six-month internship at a brewery combined with a specialisation in brewing science and technology.

»This will give students an even stronger scientific understanding of the methods and processes that determine the flavour, quality and shelf life of beer,« explains Henrik Siegumfeldt, Director of Studies and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Life Sciences.

Denmark knows its beer

The master brewer programme is a collaboration between the Scandinavian School of Brewing (SSB) and the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Copenhagen.

»We have joined forces to create a world-class master brewer programme. We are already a school and an industry with centuries of proud traditions. The world’s fourth largest brewery is Danish [Carlsberg,..ed.], and Denmark is the country in the world with the most breweries per capita,« says Axel G. Kristiansen, Director of SSB.

Together with the master brewer diploma, graduates obtain an MSc in Food Science and Technology with a specialisation in brewing science and technology.

English-language programme

The programme will be in English and around 15 master brewers will graduate from the programme every year.

The first students will be starting their internships at breweries throughout Denmark in January, and their lectures start 1 September 2011.

If you dream of being a brewer you can find more information about the programme here.
