If the University Post survey is to be believed far-away relationships are hard work. But for those that want to make the effort, new technologies can come to the rescue, pre-empting the temptation of new encounters.
Love from afar can now have similarities to a close relationship, according to Poul Poder, associate professor at the Department of Sociology.
»With Skype, for example, you can see and hear your partner as if you were in the same room. The saying ‘out of sight, out of mind’ does not apply anymore,« he says.
In a visual sense, you are part of the other person's life without being physically there, Poder notes.
Of course, audiovisual communication alone might not make a long-distance relationship work.
»Erotic love is of course a part of personal relationships. Through technology you will still not be able to touch your partner. That doesn't mean there can't be any physical-erotic engagement.«
Visual pleasures can satisfy sexual needs. And then there is of course erotic conversation, he adds.
