Architect, Michaela Weisskirchner-Barfod, applies a new coat of fresh, black paint
While some of us slept, a team of 10 students and 2 architects busied themselves preparing the Faculty of Life Sciences’ student-owned and run »Café Væksthuset« (Danish for »Café Greenhouse«) for its spring opening on Monday, 28 March.
The final preparations are in addition to a complete renovation of the four year old café. The work party built, painted and modified new and old furniture, giving a new face to the ever-popular gastronomic institution.
»We are not trying to reinvent ourselves,« comments Sine Bomskov-Møller, head of the student board that runs the café, »it is just to give it a modern touch.«
The renovations are different than the ordinary preparations that take place every year after the café’s winter break.
At the end of 2010, café connoisseurs and architects Michaela Weisskirchner-Barfod and Nanna Bjerre approached the Væksthuset Board and offered their services, pro bono, to the café.
The Board gladly accepted the offer and applied for funding from the Studiemiljøpuljen, a fund dedicated to improving the study environment at the University. They were granted DKK 20,000.
»I live over there, on the corner,« says Weisskirchner-Barfod, referring to Frederiksberg Campus, »I thought it was a pity that the interior wasn’t being utilized. So, I asked the board if we could help.«
Although the Board plans to start things off slowly this spring season, it has big plans for the future.
Væksthuset will become more bistro based, with sandwiches and salads at lunch time and relaxed dining in the evenings. On Fridays, expect a barbeque buffet and, on Sundays, a student-budget brunch.
As usual, students can expect to receive a 35 pct. discount.
On Monday, 28 March, Café Væksthuset will reopen for the 2011 season. Live music, and special offers on beer and food will occur throughout the day.
