The University of Copenhagen has maintained its high ranking on the Shanghai-based Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). This is according to the University of Copenhagen's intranet for staff and students KUnet.
Copenhagen thereby scores almost the same ranking that the university has got over the last five years on Shanghai. Last year it ranked 40th.
The ARWU is one of three influential international university rankings, along with the QS, where Copenhagen ranked 45th in 2010, and the Times Higher Education ranking, where Copenhagen ranked 177th in 2010.
The ranking is based on a number of factors, including the number of Nobel laureates and research citations. However, ARWU is not designed to evaluate research in the fields of law, theology and humanities, although certain English social science journals are included in the method.
ARWU is dominated by American and British universities. The top 20 consists of 17 American universities and three British. Harvard, Stanford and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are ranked one, two and three respectively.
Aarhus University is the next best Danish university with a ranking of 86.
