University placed 45th, six places up over last year

by Joe Short

After faltering in 2009, the University of Copenhagen has regained six places to 45th position on the QS rankings.

This can be seen from the just released results

The results in previous years were a joint partnership of the Times Higher Education rankings and QS. Whereas this year's QS rankings use the same methodology as last year, the soon-to-be-released Times Higher Education ranking will have new parameters, making their rankings harder to compare.

Århus falls back to 84th

In the QS tables, the Copenhagen maintains its status as the top Scandinavian institution.

Norway´s University of Oslo has overtaken the century mark, hitting 100th position after being 101st best university last year.

Århus University, which recorded an impressive leap last year from 81st to 63rd place last year, has been unable to continue the rapid improvement, falling back to 84th position, sandwiched between Utrecht University (NED) and the University of Leeds (UK).

The Technical University of Denmark overtakes 18 rivals to secure a place of 141st.

Some faculties did well, some didn't

Copenhagen's individual faculty results are intriguing. Gainers are Life Sciences, which leaps up to 56th from 86th, and Natural Sciences which moves up to 47th from 72nd.

On the downside, the Faculty of Social Sciences loses ground, now scoring 56th, compared to 36th a year ago.

US and UK at the top

Ahead of Copenhagen on the overall ranking are historically renowned institutions of the UK and the US, who account for the top 17 universities in the world.

Top three in the QS ranking are the University of Cambridge, Harvard and Yale, respectively.

For Greek student, there is just the pizzeria

Evangelos, a Copenhagen graduate, wants to make a living in Denmark. Going back to crisis-ridden Greece is senseless. But the ‘networking’ here is also proving illusory

Students stay if they have a job offer, love

Choosing to stay in Denmark is choosing a new identity, home, status and life stage. So what on earth is going on in international students’ heads? And how does the economic recession affect it?
