Rarely do I post negative things about Denmark and even more rarely do I post about Danish politics, but with new immigration laws that will affect myself, my friends, and future expatriates, this has become personal.
Denmark is a country that has been revered around the world for a social welfare system that can be unmatched. Documentary makers, news shows, and even Oprah [American TV host...ed.] have come to this country to tout its free healthcare, generous maternity leave benefits, and an excellent unemployment system. Danish people pride themselves in thinking of everyone as an equal regardless of how much money they have or what they do for a living. It is a society and system that I strongly believe in and one that has impressed me in the 16 months I have lived here. It is, as some Americans would call it 'a socialist paradise.'
Unfortunately, the Danish happiness and security so widely publicized has one catch: you can only have access to it if you are a purebred Dane. Foreigners coming into this country, even those married to Danes like myself, are not entitled to unemployment money or student allowance. They can't exchange drivers' licenses and, at least in the eyes of the current government, foreigners are not equals to Danes.
Last week, Denmark's most conservative minority party, Danske Folkeparti, pushed the government to create laws governing Family Reunification Visas or those that apply to foreign spouses and children of Danish citizens.
The laws now state that in order to be allowed to stay in Denmark on these visas one must take a 70-question oral and written exam in Danish about Danish culture, history, and values. Thirty-minutes are allowed for this test and 40 questions must be answered correctly. Moreover, immigrants must have work experience and be educated. In other words, if you are poor or have had a hard life they don't want you here.
In effect, these laws will serve to keep out not only the lazy folks looking to mooch off the system but all other foreigners as well. Danish is a difficult language to learn even for people who already live in the country, to have to learn it on your own in your home country is nearly impossible. The test will serve as a roadblock for many who are even thinking of coming to Denmark and will effectively push away the little diversity this country has.
I have put my faith and my heart into the Danish system since I moved here. I have made every effort to learn the language, abide by the cultural norms, get an education, and find employment. I have touted Danish values to my relatives when I returned to the States for vacation. I believed in Denmark, but Denmark never believed in me.
I find it difficult to see how I will be able to raise my daughter in a country whose government believes that foreigners, like her own mother, are a nuisance to society. I do not know how I can teach her about the values of diversity and the importance of multiculturalism in a country that uses tricks to bypass EU rules and keep anyone who isn't 100% Danish out. Denmark has hurt and betrayed me.
I still love Denmark. I love the laid-back attitudes of the Danish people, the collectiveness of society, and the commitment to environmental policies that will make the world a better place. But it is increasingly difficult to live under a government that ostracizes me and people like me. I have tried so hard to become one of the people, but the government's sneaky ways of edging foreigners like me out could one day put me over the edge.

I dont blame Denmark for their anti-immigration policies, i only wish my country (UK) was the same, UK has became unrecognisable to me due to mass immigration, crime is seriously high and daily, terrorism is also high with cells all over the country with hate websites appearing all the time, there are no jobs or houses for our children, we get taxed all the time to pay for the ridiculous over-breeding of immigrants and spongers - BE WARNED _ DO NOT DESTROY YOUR COUNTRY LIKE TONY BLAIR AND GORDON BROWN HAS DONE TO OURS, DO NOT JOIN EU AND KEEP YOUR BORDERS CLOSED!
Good luck and god bless
I got screwed too. Just when I thought I was eligible for permanent residency the new system snuck up and bit me on the ass. The ironic thing is Denmark was once multicultural. With a Portuguese queen, and more recently Prince Henrik of France, Princess Alexandra, Princess Mary, Princess Marie....with all that rif raff in royalty how can such a closed policy exist?
I find the Danish immigration laws rather discriminatory. In all my working experience in common law (i.e. Anglo-America) countries - I have never encountered such attitude when it comes to family re-unifications. In such case, I don't see how Princess Mary - an Australian should have actually be allowed to stay in Denmark - especially since, in most cases, royals do not work for their living. So why should there be any difference between Princess Mary and any other Australian or American or African who marries a Dane!? Denmark after all prides itself on equality or I might be mistaken.
I am not agree with this new law.
It is a law explicitly exclude foreigners.
May I ask a 100% Danish citizen who did understand all the laws of Denmark.
If they test people with Danish law.
They will answer any question correct?I am the one who is married to a Danish man soon.
And I have tested the level of knowledge and Danish law, Denmark
The pronunciation is different to my country altogether.
I do not have to pass me because I was with my boyfriend talking in English.
I do not have to learn Danish for how long?
I understand you can speak Danish
This must be a World Court lawsuit
I don't think you understood my original post. I am married to a Danish citizen and my daughter is a Danish citizen, yet people like me are being not allowed into Denmark and thus Danish citizens are forced to move somewhere else because they chose to marry a foreigner. This is not about "working for what you want," this is about being able to live in a country that my husband and daughter have the RIGHT to live in. If my home country, the United States, had these same rules then we would not be allowed to live together as a family despite the fact that we have followed all procedures. This isn't about working hard, this is about laws that are restricting our rights to freedom and life.
Ok.
So they won't let you live in Denmark until you pass the Danish culture test.
I didn't expect such a rough law from Denmark.
I think they are doing this all wrong like all other countries.
They let beggars and criminals live in Denmark quite easily if they are from EU. But they stop other people that have education and could actually bring improvement to this country.
What are you going to do?
Study Danish in USA?
Hi,
So many foreigners come to Europe just to take advantages of social system. They do not integrate and they are making countries within country demanding the rights that foreigners dont have in their homeland!!!!!!!!
Stay away from Europe you enemies of our culture and freedom.
In one sentence you wrote "THEY (emphasis added) do not integrate and they are making countries within country demanding the rights that foreigners don't have in their homeland!!!!"
In the next sentence, you wrote "Stay away YOU (emphasis added) enemies of our culture and freedom"
My question to you is whether you read this blog entry and whether you understand that the writer is not making demands on Denmark, is not challenging Danish culture, and is the mother of a Danish child.
When you wrote "they" it seemed you were referring to the "so many foreigners" who you believe come to Denmark just to take advantage of (the social) system. Do you think the blog writer is one of those people? If you do, perhaps you can explain why you think that today, at the end of 2010, this writer is one of "those" people.
You need to keep in mind that there is a financial crisis all throughout the world, and that the influx of immigrants to DK has slowed by more than 50%. Most of the financial problems you read about or are experiencing have sources OTHER THAN this writer, her Danish husband or her Danish child. Much of the crime, I am sure you are aware, if being committed by Europeans who have been entering this and other countries and taking advantage of trusting people. That is just more evidence that DK AND Danes need to learn, if they do not already know it, that it is a global world whether the like it or not. They were not forced to join the EU . which is what lead to many of the criminals who have recently been caught being able to enter DK. It was voluntary and the government, at the time, evaluated inclusion in the EU and decided it was worth the risk. ANow DK has to deal with more "foreigners." At the same time, companies like Novo Nordisk sell their products around the world and have to answer to partners and investors around the world. Denmark can try to stop globalization, but it will not succeed. The best thing it can do, is try to guide it. And it will not succeed at that if it continues, through this government, to use and abuse immigrants from non EU, non nordic countries by blaming them/us for everything that goes wrong.
In fact, it will ONLY succeed if it looks carefully into the problems and tries to address them one by one through a reasonable process with reasonably, logical and truly fair guidelines. If DK will end up having internationals here, wouldn't it also be better to have them come because it is attractive and to stay because the attractions are actually enduring, consistent, and worthwhile? Otherwise, it will have nothing but second generation, embittered residents, citizens and people with indf'dt rights, who feel beat up, hated, and excluded such that they can find no reason to love their country?
To the rest of us, these concepts are "no brainers." ENough of the punitive mentality. I believe your fears, in this case, are unfounded.
Hello!
I can't imagine how it would feel like to put effort into receiving a citizenship and then find out you have to do more...
But I don't think you any of you should give up.
Having to pass a difficult test about Danish culture might be a good thing.
I heard about the Finnish educational system - if they have 50 job openings for ...let's say priests, then there are only 50 places at the University to study to become a priest.
What is there to do if there are too many immigrants in Denmark and some of them are already unemployed?
You could choose to teach your daughter that she has to work for what she wants.
